Making its third annual running in late January 2018, the Phoenix Women’s Half Marathon, 10K & 5K is described on their website as “destined to be the premier women’s running event in Arizona”. The race organizers describe the current state of women’s running in Arizona as on the decline over the past three years; determined to fix that, the organizers created an event that was just about the running — not the long lines, inadequate parking, or crowds of confused runners.

All three events — the half marathon, the 10k & the 5K — begin at Arizona State University’s West Campus in Glendale. From there, runners follow a nearly flat out-and-back course along the Arizona Canal Trail and Skunk Creek Trail with almost no net elevation gain. The course is mostly pavement and crushed gravel, making the half marathon a great race for setting a personal record.

The half marathon starts at 8:00 AM, followed by the 10K and 5K over the next half hour. With chip timing, finisher medals, race photos, giveaways at the finish line, and age group and overall awards three deep, the Phoenix Women’s Half Marathon promises all the perks of a well-organized race without the downsides.

The Phoenix Women’s Half Marathon also offers a virtual run option for runners who can’t make it to Phoenix on race day, which runners may use to participate via running, walking, treadmill, or even taking part in another race.

Race Weather & Climate

Located among the hills, mountains and deserts of central southern Arizona, within a short drive of both nearby Tempe and Scottsdale, Phoenix typically sees January temperatures that average between 45°F and 67°F, with just under an inch of precipitation for the month.

On race day (Jan. 28), the average low is 46ºF and the average high is 69ºF.
