As the capital of the Golden State of California and the home to the Pony Express Terminus, Sacramento has made its historical mark on the state and country. This year Sacramento will honor the history of the Pony Express with the 2nd annual running of the race named after it.
Note: The 2017 Pony Express Half Marathon has been cancelled.
Both the marathon and half marathon start on Capitol Mall in downtown Sacramento and makes a loop around Raley Field before returning to the east side of the Sacramento River.
The course then continues along the river that gives the city its name until reaching the halfway point of the race.
From there, runners will turn around and return to Capitol Mall along a different route that takes runners past Land Park and back toward downtown before crossing the finish line in front of the Capitol Building.
The marathon course is a Boston qualifier, and the weekend features a race expo and pre-race dinner as well as a lecture series on all topics running.
