Overview

The Publix Battleship 12K, a patriotic run to honor those who have served, was started in 2015 as a way to pay tribute to those heroes who defend our freedom. Many Veterans have not received the heroes welcome that those returning from WWII received, and it was with this in mind that the event was created. Whether someone was deployed to combat or only served a brief time, every man and woman who has put on the uniform to keep our Country free deserves to be thanked.

From the patriotic opening ceremonies and National Anthem, to the spirit on the course, and finishing at Battleship Memorial Park next to the USS Alabama, runners and walkers will experience a sense of patriotism rarely felt at an event. Upon entering the park for the homestretch runners are greeted with small American flags to finish their 12K (7.45 miles) journey. Civilians, Active Military, and Veterans can be heard cheering on finishers while “Thank you for your service” echoes around the finish line.

Course Description

The Publix Battleship 12K is a simple point to point course. Runners start on Old Spanish Trail (Hwy 98) and turn right just past the old chamber of commerce to head down the hill. Runners will be in the southernmost east bound lane and the emergency lane heading straight across Hwy 98 to the USS Alabama where they will be greeted to a patriotic welcome.

Portable toilets are located at the start, at water stations and at the finish. Water stations are located approximately every 2 miles.

The course is very well marked. There are mile markers and directional signs where appropriate. Runners must be able to complete the ~7.5 mile course in 2.5 hours. That translates to a 20:00 minute per mile average, which is a brisk walk. Runners not able to hold this pace will be picked up by the SAG vehicle and either moved up the course or brought to the finish line. There are no exceptions to this. The race runs AGAINST traffic and runners will not be allowed to continue on their own.
