runsignup-blueThis tiny rural village in mid-Michigan which lies just over an hour’s drive west from Detroit is set to welcome runners and walkers as summer is giving way to fall to the running of the Run for CHUM Half Marathon & 5K, designed as a fundraiser to benefit C.H.U.M. — “Children and Horses United in Movement” — a local nonprofit dedicated to therapeutic riding.

Begun in the late 1990s, CHUM today offers therapeutic riding classes and programs that help with children dealing with a wide range of medical, physical and psychological issues and disabilities, often through the use of what is known as “hippotherapy,” or the use of the horse in medical treatment.

Especially for children who have experienced movement dysfunction, hippotherapy can help improve their neurological functioning and sensory processing, through bonding with the horse and learning from its movements.

For those running the half marathon — and you’ll need to be able to finish the 13.1-mile route within the race’s three-hour time limit, organizers add — the race course follows an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at Dansville High School on Adams Street.

From there, the course ventures out onto a combination of paved roads around town as well as some dirt roads, and then brings runners back to the high school where they cross the finish line on the schoo’s athletic track.

Runners in the half marathon and those running or walking the 5K both start their respective races at 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM, respectively, at the high school. There is also a quarter-mile run for kids, which takes children age 11 and under once around the school’s track.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the southern central part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, just over 20 miles southeast of Lansing and roughly 80 miles west of Detroit, Dansville typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in September, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 26°F (in 1991) and as high as 94°F (in 2002).

On race day (Sept. 2), the average low is 53ºF and the average high is 76ºF.
