Nestled right along the southern shoreline of Lake Houston, the reservoir that makes up the western fork of Texas’s San Jacinto River here about 20 miles northeast of downtown Houston, two of the city’s urban parks are the setting for the 10th annual running of a race event dedicated to women that the race organizers say is the Houston area’s only women’s-only half marathon running event.

The brainchild of the founders of TriGirl Sports, a local running and event company devoted to staging triathlon events for women, the RunGirl Half Marathon will take runners through Houston’s Alexander Deussen Park and Eisenhower Park, which sit side-by-side here on the southern edge of the lake just to the northeast of the city.

Runners will start and finish the race on Duessen Drive near the water’s edge inside Alexander Duessen Park, named for the local petroleum geologist who donated the more than 300 acres that now make up the park back in the mid-1950s.

Its much larger neighboring park, Dwight D. Eisenhower Park, today is a popular local fishing spot for the rainbow trout in its waterways.

The course follows an out-and-back route that makes two laps through both parks, starting in Duessen Park and then heading south along Duessen Drive all the way south to the Duessen Parkway, followed by a brief stretch along Aqueduct Road before turning onto Walton Road.

Runners then head deep eastward into Eisenhower Park for a loop along Walton Road before returning to Aqueduct Road and then heading back over into Duessen Park.

After making their way back to the starting line area, runners then head south along Duessen Drive again for the race’s second loop, which takes them back over into Eisenhower Park for a briefer loop along Walton Road, and then brings them back up to the shoreline of Lake Houston for the race finish.

Thanks to its location near the lake, most of the course is fast and flat, and runners can expect paved surfaces throughout the race’s 13.1 miles.

Race Weather & Climate

Well-known for its often very hot and humid summers thanks to both its southern latitude and its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, Houston usually sees much milder and drier weather in the winter season.

In December, temperatures range between 47°F and 65°F — on the day of the race (Dec. 11), the average low is 48°F and the average high is 67°F — while precipitation amounts average just under 3.8 inches for the month.
