Held in late November and starting at the Red Rock Day Use Area in Los Padres National Forest, the Santa Barbara Red Rock Half Marathon is the shortest of three race distances offered on race day — if you’re up for it, you can also run either the full marathon or the 50-miler.
This low-key event, while offering the half marathon distance, has the heart of an ultra. The course markings, while adequate, will be minimal. Runners must pay attention to both the directions as well as their surroundings in order to stay on the course.
Additionally, aid provided on the course will be at a minimum as well. The late November temperatures and early morning start will require less hydration than a hot summer day, but runners should err on the side on caution and bring what they need to complete the distance.
The out and back course offers beautiful views of the Santa Barbara Front and Back Country. Held on the trails of the Los Padres National Forest, runners will have a chance to travel on some of the most beautiful trails in the country.
The Los Padres National Forest spans almost 2 million acres and features terrain in elevations at sea level all the way to 8,847 feet. Hundreds of miles of trails traverse the forest and runners will have just a small glimpse of what this huge section of land has to offer.
All runners must pay the $20 Rancho Oso resort fee. Upon completion of the race, runners will have an opportunity to take advantage of the resort’s amenities. Racers can shower, swim, refuel at restaurants, or shop in the general store. Plus, there is camping available for those who want to make a weekend trip out of their race.
All finishers will receive an award upon completing their race. The top overall male and female runners will receive an additional award. Runners are invited to stick around on Saturday afternoon and evening to join the campfire and camping festivities.
