2016 marks the inaugural Shasta Cascade Marathon & Half Marathon, two events that make up part of the Shasta Cascade Weekend Sports Festival in northern California.
The half marathon course begins at the Civic Auditorium in downtown Redding. From there, much of the course is run on the Shasta Trails that Redding is known for. As most of the course is run along the Sacramento River, named after California’s capital, runners can enjoy riverfront views for much of the race.
After the first mile run along the south side of the river, runners cross a bridge and continue along the Sacramento River westward for the next several miles. Mile 4.5 marks another bridge to be crossed, leading runners west along the south side of the river again before turning around and returning to the finish line, back where they started.
The festival also includes a 10K, 5K, triathlon, and duathlon in addition to the marathon and half.
Race organizers note that there is no time limit for either event, and walkers are welcome to participate.
Race Weather & Climate
Like much of northern California, Redding experiences warm spring weather in May, although temperatures can range as low as 34° (2000) and as high as 104° (1987).
On race day (May 28), the average low is 55ºF and the average high is 85ºF.
