Saturday, October 12, 2019 • South Jordan, UT • Course Map

Nestled among the Salt Lake Valley here in central northern Utah, which lies between the nearby Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges, the city of South Jordan and its neighboring town Copperton play host in 2019 to the 10th annual running of the SoJo Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K.

This race takes runners a west-to-east, point-to-point course to South Jordan from the town that lies in the shadow of the largest man-made excavation on earth, the Bingham Canyon Mine in the hills just above Copperton. Just over 715 runners crossed the finish line in all three race combined in 2016, including 395 finishers in the half marathon.

Runners in the 13.1-mile half marathon start their race in front of Early Light Academy in the nearby community of Daybreak.

From there, runners follow a route that unfolds along a long, gradual descent from west to east, taking runners past Oquirrh Lake and Oquirrh Park, a couple of long, mostly gradual downhill stretches along 3200 West and West 9800 South, followed by a two-mile stretch into the finish line that unfolds on the trails alongside the Jordan River.

Once runners make their way almost to the river, the course then turns right off the roadway and onto the Jordan River Parkway Trail, a system of paved urban trails that when complete will stretch all the way from the Great Salt Lake at its northern end to Utah Lake at its southernmost point.

After turning off the highway, runners follow the Jordan River Trail for just over two miles before turning off the trail for the race finish, near the Jordan River Park.

While the full marathon includes some uphill stretches, the half marathon features a mostly downhill route from the start to the finish, as the race course drops more than 500 feet in elevation from the starting line in Daybreak to the finish line near the river.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central northern Utah, just under 20 miles south of Salt Lake City, South Jordan typically experiences mild to moderately warm and occasionally still hot weather in the early fall, and relatively low rainfall year-round.

On race day (Oct. 12), the average low is 42ºF and the average high is 66ºF.
