Overview

Saturday, January 27, 2018 • Dothan, AL • Course Map

active-reg-buttonSet for its 7th annual running in 2018, the Southeast Alabama Community Foundation’s half marathon takes runners on an out-and-back course through this small southeast Alabama city, among the region known as the Wiregrass, thanks to the grasses native to this corner of Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Runners will start and finish the out-and-back loop course for the race near Dothan’s Flowers Hospital, at the intersection of Westside Drive and North Shady Lane. From there, the course takes runners along a combination of tree-lined residential roads and neighborhoods, with plentiful rolling hills and a pair of bridge crossings over the Little Choctawhatchee River, as well as a run over Rock Creek. The race will take runners also around the park roads and wooded trails just south of Westgate Memorial Park, off Whatley Drive. Runners will make their way around the edges of the athletic fields near the park, and through the trails that wind through the woods before returning back to Whatley Drive, and then heading back toward the hospital for the race finish. Proceeds from the race will go to benefit the Southeast Alabama Community Foundation’s program of providing grants to grants to other charitable organizations in the counties around Dothan, as well as scholarships for area high school and college students in need. In past years, more than 200 runners have crossed the finish line in both race distances combined — roughly 120 finishers in the half marathon and 65 to 75 in the 5K. In addition to the 13.1-mile and 5K races, the SACF will also host a 1-mile fun run and a virtual run for runners who can’t make it to the event–or just want to sleep in.
