A run almost entirely around New Jersey’s Oradell Reservoir, just a short drive north from New York City, awaits runners at the Suez Run the Reservoir Half Marathon and 1-mile fun run, which makes its annual running this year on the weekend after Labor Day here in this small borough of New Jersey’s Bergen County.
You’ll run along a combination of residential roads through the neighborhoods of this 10,000-resident borough, as well as along a 2.3-mile-long stretch of dirt and gravel trails through the woods along the reservoir the race is named for.
While there are plentiful gently rolling hills throughout the course, there are really no big changes in elevation — the race’s highest point lies at just over 70 feet above sea level while its lowest lies at about 20 feet.
The race begins in front of the Hackensack Meridian Health Pascack Valley Medical Center on Old Hook Road, and from there runners head east toward Emerson Woods and then south along Main Street, over to Kinderkamack Road, where they’ll run for about two miles until they reach Oradell Avenue.
After the left turn onto Oradell Avenue, the course then heads east again, and then turns left onto Grant Avenue, which will bring runners north toward Haworth Country Club and then onto the trails along the reservoir.
Later, after runners make it up to Old Hook Road again and into Pasack Brook County Park, there’s a final loop on the winding roads and trails through the park, before bringing the field back onto Old Hook Road for the race finish.
Proceeds from the race go to benefit the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation’s Tackle Kids Cancer program, organizers note. The partnership of doctors, researchers, corporate donors and community supporters works to fund research to find a cure for pediatric cancer.
