Overview

Set for Saturday, July 26, 2025, the Tantalizing Tantalus Trail Half Marathon is a standout event in HURT Hawaii’s trail series. Starting in 2020, this 13.1-mile loop through the verdant trails of Mount Tantalus, above Honolulu, has become a favorite for its panoramic city and rainforest views, rugged terrain, and community-focused organization.

Runners begin at the Hawai‘i Nature Center, ascending on single-track and dirt trail before reaching the misty Nu‘uanu–Jackass Ginger Trailhead, where the turn-around awaits. Returning via streams, exposed roots, and muddy tread, the course combines roughly 2,000 ft of elevation gain with technical sections that both challenge and reward. Aid stations with water and snacks appear at key intervals, and the cupless format encourages sustainability—bring your own hydration cup.

Finishers cross the line to cheers and camaraderie, often covered in mud and smiles. Awards are uniquely Hawaiian: handcrafted trophies and HURT-logo goodies, with podium photos showcasing the sweaty, joyful effort. It’s a technical, wet, and rewarding test—not just another trail half—but a full sensory immersion into the Tantalus forest.

Part of the 2025 HURT Trail Series (10 races), Tantalizing Tantalus contributes toward the coveted “Trailblazer” title, honoring runners who complete multiple events.
