Note: This race has been cancelled.

The first race of the year in a series of Dallas-area half marathons known as the Four Seasons Half Marathon Challenge — which also includes the Big D Half in the spring, the Hottest Half in the summer, and the Tyler Rose Half Marathon in the fall — the Texas Half will make its 16th annual running in Irving this year, starting from the new Irving Convention Center.

For most of its history, the race has been run in nearby Dallas on a loop course that took runners around White Rock Lake, a park near the center of the city that’s also home to several other races throughout the year. This year, the race directors are opting to take it to Irving to show off another part of the city, known as Las Colinas.

Runners will start the out-and-back course for the race at the Irving Convention Center, a boxy, modern 275,000-square-foot building along Las Colinas Boulevard that lies just a few miles east of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Though the race includes some hills in the first few miles, the entire course is run on paved surfaces, and the uphill segments also become downhill segments on the return trip.

After leaving the starting line, the course heads out onto Las Colinas Boulevard for about the next 2 miles; that’s followed by turns onto La Villita Boulevard before arriving at the turnaround point.

When runners are nearing Interstate 635, they’ll turn around and return along the same route to the Irving Convention Center. The race isn’t over yet, though–the course repeats the same 6.5 miles again for the second half of the race before returning to the finish line back at the convention center.

The Texas Half — which saw 531 finishers in 2016 — is open to walkers as well as runners, as long as walkers can complete the course in four hours.
