Overview

Rooted in a 48-year local tradition, the Tromptown Run—named for the village’s early colonial identity—is a beloved summer staple supporting the De Ruyter Volunteer Fire Department and graduating seniors of the Class of 2026. The event offers both Half Marathon and 5K distances, each kicking off from the picturesque village center.

Runners on the half marathon course enjoy a scenic loop circling De Ruyter Lake, savoring rolling country roads, dam-crossing panoramas, and valley vistas as they close their journey through the village. The 5K has a refreshed out-and-back course for 2025. Post-run, half finishers refuel with a free pancake breakfast, followed by community-wide festivities at the annual Firemen’s Field Days festival.

What Makes It Unique

  • One of upstate NY’s longest-running small-town races, with 48 editions and deeply rooted community ties.
  • Scenic, certified loop that balances gentle hills with rewarding rural vistas, yet remains accessible for PR efforts.
  • Hands-on community support throughout: pancake breakfast, De Ruyter Firemen’s Fair, and supporting local causes like the volunteer fire department.

Why It Stands Out
Tromptown captures the charm of a community-centered race—balanced with strong race-day logistics, local flair, and scenic country roads. Ideal for runners seeking a peaceful yet purposeful event, with post-race pancakes, midday village fair, and a supportive small-town spirit.

Course Description

The half-marathon course, of 45 years, remains the same, but with new start and finishing lines. It includes circling the lake, then the continuation of the sights, sounds, and smells of fresh country air intensify as you leave the dam near the half-way point. As you head south for the finish line the views unfold of the valleys and the village to the east.

The marathon takes in the first 12.1 miles of the half-marathon course before turning south, then east at about the 17 point. Beginning around the 20 mile point one heads northwest and gradually ascends to Tromptown’s own but short “heartbreak Hill”. From 22-25 miles one is heading west, finish line bound, descending with the wide panoramic view of three valleys and their surrounding hills. The last mile is level in the village.

The courses start near the finish line in front of the school. They are certified. With the new marathon course and moving the start and finish lines of the half-marathon new certifications for both were required.
