Runners get the chance to trek the rolling single-track trails through the forests around the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir here in the foothills of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains at the Warrior Creek Half Marathon, which is set for its fourth annual running just a couple of weeks before the new year, returning after a three-year hiatus from 2016-2018.
The race takes place in Wilkes County, N.C., home to the small towns of Wilkesboro and Boomer, a farming community of just over 2,200 residents that was originally called Warrior Creek, for the stream that flows through this area.
From the Warrior Creek campground near the 1,475-acre reservoir — which is popular for boating, canoeing, fishing, kayaking and swimming in warm-weather months — runners head out onto the Warrior Creek Trail to start the race.
The trails, which wind about 17 miles through the forest that surrounds the reservoir, are often used by local trail runners, hikers and mountain bikers, and have been recognized by the International Mountain Biking Association as one of the world’s best mountain biking trails.
They’re hilly and challenging; as organizers note, this is “some of the best rolling single track trail in North Carolina.”
To receive a finisher’s medal, a runner must be able to complete 13.1 miles and cross the finish line back at the Warrior Creek campground within the course time limit of 4 hours. Age group awards will also be presented.
