At the end of the hot summer months here in Central California’s San Joaquin Valley, Fresno plays host to a race that started as an informal run among friends and grew and grew over the years, and only in 2012 became an organized race that typically sees more than 400 runners cross the finish line in all races combined.
This year, the race known as the Wascally Wabbit Half Mawothon (named after Bugs Bunny, the cartoon nemesis of Elmer Fudd) features a 13.1-mile run for both individual runners and two-person teams, as well as a 5K event for runners and walkers.
Helping foster children. The race today supports the locally based Kids Kasa Foster Care, a local foster care agency that serves the needs of children in the Fresno area who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect — 100 percent of the proceeds go to help the foster children in their care.
Start/finish in Woodward Park. For runners, the race starts and finishes inside Fresno’s Woodward Park, a 300-acre park along the San Joaquin River near the northern edge of the city. The half marathon and the 5K run/walk start in separate places within the park — while the 5K racers start on Yosemite Road next to the lake, the half marathon begins on the park’s eastern edge, just north of the Japanese Gardens next to Friant Road.
From there, the course heads onto the Lewis Eaton Trail, a 4-mile-long paved trail that unfolds largely along the river and features gorgeous views of the foothills of the Sierra Mountains off in the distance. Runners head north around the edges of the park, past the dirt BMX course trails and hills and onto the Lewis Eaton Trail as it makes its way north outside the park.
Run the trails outside the park. Once runners make it past the first bridge and the relay exchange around the mile 6 marker, they continue north for a couple more miles until they reach the turnaround point, and from there head back south along the Lewis Eaton Trail back into Woodward Park.
They’ll make a loop around the park’s southern edge and head onto Yosemite Road, past the Japanese Gardens again and past the lake, to cross the finish line near where they started next to Friant Road.
