Note: This race has been discontinued for 2018. The below information describes the 2017 race.
Known as one of California’s wine capitals for its blend of wineries, art galleries, antique shops and museums, the population of the small town of Fulton swells every summer with the throngs of tourists and wine enthusiasts who flock to this area located just an hour’s drive north of San Francisco.
Note: The race moved in 2014 from Healdsburg south about 10 miles to Fulton, California.
That, of course, makes it one of the best places to combine a morning race with an afternoon and weekend of wine and food, and that’s exactly what the race organizers have in mind for the Water to Wine Half Marathon, which makes its 7th annual running in the late summer of 2017, at a time of year when sunshine will be abundant and rain is extremely scarce — exactly the conditions that help make it perfect for growing wine grapes.
The race takes runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes on the grounds of the Kendall Jackson Wine Center, which lies at 5007 Fulton Road, north of Santa Rosa. From there, the race unfolds past the vineyards south of the winery, with stretches past the Martinelli Vineyards and La Crema Winery, and a brief stretch along Mark West Creek.
The course time limit for the race is 3.5 hours, which means runners will need to keep a pace of 15 minutes per mile or faster in order to finish their 13.1 miles on time.
With a combination of mountains in the distance, the rolling fields of the vineyards along the route here in Sonoma County and the peaceful scenic beauty of the winery at the finish line, the Water to Wine Half promises a relaxing course with plenty to distract you if you’re out for fun, as well as the chance to record an excellent time thanks to the race’s elevation profile.
Race Weather & Climate
Nestled in the heart of Northern California’s Sonoma County, roughly 70 miles north of San Francisco, Fulton typically sees warm and usually very dry weather in August, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 40°F (in 1938) and as high as 106°F (in 1998).
On race day (Aug. 6), the average low is 53ºF and the average high is 83ºF.
