Sunday, June 30, 2019 • Chula Vista, CA • Course Map
One of a series of Dirt Devil Racing’s trail running events that take place throughout the year in the San Diego County area, the Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon & 10K takes runners on a winding route along the trails that run along the shorelines of Upper and Lower Otay Lake just outside San Diego.
For the Wild Horse Half, runners will follow an out-and-back course that winds mostly along the lakeshore of Lower Otay Lake, just across the water from Otay Ranch and Otay County Open Space Preserve, where tens of thousands of acres have been set aside to limit the impact and encroachment of the development of nearby San Diego and Chula Vista.
These preserves connect large areas of open space that connect wildlife corridors, and keep intact large expanses of land, mountains, meadows, streams and the two lakes within the preserve.
Runners will get ample views of the untouched land beyond the lake throughout most of the race, which unfolds along the trails north from the boat launching area, all the way north to the northern end of Lower Otay Lake.
There, runners continue around the end of the lake all the way south to the first turnaround point, which lies on the peninsula that sticks out into the lake. Once they’ve made the turn, runners then head back north along the eastern side of Lower Otay Lake, all the way back to its northern end.
The next stretch of the race features a run around the western side of Upper Otay Lake to the race’s second turnaround point, and then runners will retrace their steps back to the lower lake. They’ll rejoin the section of the course they ran earlier in the race, and then head south back along the trail to the race finish line back at the boat launch.
Runners can expect a variety of terrain along the trails, which are made up of mostly single-track dirt trails along the lakeshore as well as plenty of foot bridges and a few stretches along paved roads.
While there will be aid stations out on the course, runners are strongly encouraged to bring along their own water bottles to carry with them during the race, to ensure they stay properly hydrated.
