Set for its second annual running entirely within the Hansen Dam Recreation Center, the Women Run LA Half Marathon features an out-and-back course that starts in the heart of the university campus.
The race also will be run as a benefit for Safe Passage Heals, a locally-based nonprofit that supports victims of domestic violence and their children by giving them assistance after they have escaped abusive homes and relationships, to help them rebuild their lives.
Runners will start the race at the Hansen Dam Recreation Center, which hosts a variety of recreational activities all year long. From the Aquatic Center start line, runners in all races make a loop around the aquatic center before heading on the course, which is run entirely on roads and bike trails within the park.
Half marathoners and 10K participants will also get the chance to run over Hansen Dam just past mile 2, which was built in 1940 as an effort to control the area after repeated floods in the past decades. After reaching the turnaround point on the bike trails, half marathoners will head back to the start line and begin their second loop.
Then it’s all the way back to the Aquatic Center for the race finish, where a huge video screen will be waiting and showing runners crossing the finish line, as well as “a yoga garden, health and fitness expo with food and beverage booths, activity tents, a stage with a huge video screen, and more,” organizers say.
