Note: This race has been cancelled for 2018.

The stark beauty of Arizona’s South Mountain Park is the site for the Y Race Phoenix Half Marathon and Family 5K, a race that takes place entirely inside the 16,000-acre park, the largest municipal park anywhere in the country.

The race is hosted by the Valley of the Sun YMCA and Arizona State University, which have teamed up to host Arizona’s most historic running event — the Y Race Phoenix, now in its 50th year, is the oldest road race in Arizona.

There’s plenty of scenery along the course, as the mountains of South Mountain Park form the backdrop over your shoulder throughout the entire race. The nation’s largest municipal park, South Mountain is home to more than 51 miles of trails, which draw outdoor enthusiasts by the thousands each year for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.

Both the half marathon and the 5K — which is open to both runners and walkers — are fundraiser events for the downtown Phoenix YMCA, and raise money for the organization’s inner city youth programs and Teen Center at the Lincoln Family Downtown YMCA. The race also hosts a one-mile fun run, which will start and finish at the same place as the 13.1-miler and the 5K.

The course time limit for the half marathon is 3 hours, organizers note, which works out to a time per mile of about 13 minutes, 44 seconds.

On the Friday before the race, the organizers (Arizona State University and the Valley of the Sun YMCA) will host a “Fitness Fest,” with fitness experts, trainers, nurses and healthcare professionals who will be on hand to conduct health screenings and perform wellness classes, as well as a range of seminars on maintaining optimal health.
