Sunday, August 11, 2019 • East Providence, RI • Course Map
Set for its annual late-summer running here along the banks of the Providence River, the East Bay Half Marathon welcomes runners and walkers for a race that features largely fast and flat terrain on both roads and bike paths, with gorgeous views of Narragansett Bay and the neighborhoods of this city throughout.
Runners (and walkers) start the out-and-back course for the race at Pierce Memorial Stadium, which lies just off Mercer Street and 5th Street, near Metacomet Country Club. Until just a few years ago, the stadium was the home of the Rhode Island Stingers soccer team, and today serves as the stadium for many area high school sports.
From there, the course heads south along Lyon Avenue and then southeast along Veterans Memorial Parkway, beginning a stretch that lasts for the next three miles until you get to Bullocks Point Avenue (the road by then having turned into Bullocks Point Avenue, after also going through Pawtucket Avenue).
That stretch leads you down to Bullocks Point, today a densely populated waterfront neighborhood that was once the home of the Bullock’s Point Light, a lighthouse built in the 1860s that lasted until it was damaged in the Hurricane of 1938.
Once you make it around the southern tip of the point, there’s a more than three-mile-long stretch along the East Bay Bike Path, a paved trail that stretches more than 14 miles between India Point Park in Providence and Independence Park in nearby Bristol.
These are some of the flattest miles of the race as they unfold along the Providence River, leading up to Bold Point Park.
There’s a final loop along the trail near that park, and then runners head off it between miles 11 and 12 and onto Veterans Memorial Highway, which you’ll take to head back to Pierce Memorial Stadium for the race finish.
