I hadn’t thought of this until one of our Facebook fans posed this question on our page recently, but fan BJ Thomas wrote that there there were few Sunday races left.
“It’s really hard to plan for Saturdays,” he added. “Sunday races were ideal.”
Leaving aside whether this is a clear trend or not, there’s an interesting question here from the perspective of how you plan travel for races — does it work better for you if a race is run on a Saturday or a Sunday?
Do Saturday races allow you to kick back for the rest of the weekend and enjoy, or is it better to run on Sunday after a weekend of rest, and then head back home the same day?

At the risk of not being “politically correct”, I purposely seek out my races for Saturdays and leave Sundays to support my setup team at a local church. There are exceptions (I won the lottery for NYC marathon this year which is always on a Sunday) but for the most part I remain flexible. And there are so many races up in the New England area for the most part I can pick and choose.
It depends on location. I like Sunday races if I am staying in the hotel for a destination race. This allows time for paket pickup and expo time plus any sight seeing activities. Driving on saturday morning is better than friday departure to hotel. For local races, saturday races allow sunday recovery at home. In my 8 years of running half marathons, I do not recall race directors ever changing their annual events from one weekend day to another. Especially successfully large events with more than 4000 runners.
Sunday races, please! Rested up and ready to go!
I’ve always told my running friends that Saturdays are for 5ks,10ks and yardwork! Sundays are for half & full marathons! I’m glad someone agrees with me…lol
