Set for its third annual running a few days before Halloween, the Race 13.1 Charleston Half Marathon takes runners on an out-and-back route through the private tree-lined roads of the Middleton Woodlands, across the street from historic Middleton Place and about a 20- to 25-minute drive from the Charleston Battery.
Like the 2016 event, the 2017 will benefit Girls on the Run of Charleston – a positive youth development program that integrates running into lessons of team work and goal setting for elementary school aged girls.
The race starts and finishes just off Middleton Lakes Road, next to a picturesque lake surrounded by century-old trees covered in Spanish moss. Runners will begin the race by making a loop around the lake, followed be a course that will lead runners through the natural beauty that can only exist on thousands of acres of undisturbed land.
The entire course will take place on hard-packed dirt roads, which will provide a flat, fast surface that is far more forgiving on runner’s knees than paved streets. Walkers are welcome as participants will have until 11:30 AM to finish any distance.
Middleton Place is home to the oldest landscaped gardens in the U.S. and is a National Historic Landmark, which the Garden Club of America has called its 65 acres “the most important and most interesting garden in America.” The gardens are open to the public and are a great post-race activity.
Runners can expect to have a text message from Race 13.1 with a link to the live results waiting for them when they cross the finish line, along with a first class post-race party.
As many as 2,000 runners are expected in the half marathon, so runners are encouraged to sign up early.
