Set for its inaugural running along the Reedy River that runs through this city in upstate South Carolina, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Race 13.1 Greenville Half Marathon joins a list of races the series organizes in medium-sized cities across the Southeast, and is its second in the state.
The race will follow a USATF-certified course that begins in Falls Park on the Reedy River, located just south of the center of the city along Furman College Way, near Fluor Field, the home of the Greenville Drive minor league baseball team.
From there, runners will head out on trails that wind along the river including the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a nearly 20-mile-long paved trail for runners, cyclists and walkers that stretches up and down the length of the river through the city.
The early miles of the race wind their way around stretches of the trail that parallel Woodland Way Circle and Cleveland Park Drive, and then bring runners back toward Falls Park, which is located in the city’s historic West End area and is perhaps best known for the waterfalls that lie at the center of it.
Once runners pass back through the park, they’ll head northwest along the trails that unfold through the Southernside, Sans Souci and Berea neighborhoods — the hilliest stretch of the race occurs in miles 7 through 9 in this area — and then head back onto the trails and toward Falls Park at the Reedy for the race finish.
Overall, the course is fast and flat — its lowest point lies at about 840 feet above sea level, while its highest tops out at just over 1,000 feet.
Walkers are welcome, organizers note — as long as they can finish the half marathon in 3 1/2 hours (the course closes at 10:30 AM).
