Aberdeen YMCA Bull Run Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Saturday, July 29, 2023 • Aberdeen, SD • Course Map

Set for its 20th annual running, the Aberdeen YMCA Bull Run has become something of a running tradition here in northeastern South Dakota, in this town along the James River that has been the home in different eras for former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle, former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona and even L. Frank Baum, the author of the beloved children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Runners follow an out-and-back loop course through the city and the outskirts of town for the Bull Run Half Marathon, which like the 10K and 5K starts near the Aberdeen YMCA on State Street.

From there, runners follow a clockwise loop through the city, along mostly fast and flat terrain on paved roads. In addition to the 13.1-mile, 10K and 5K race distances, the YMCA also offers the short-distance Fun Walk and the “Munchkin Run” for kids.

All races start and finish from the same location, and registration is available on the day of the race beginning at 6:30 AM. Participants are encouraged to arrive early, as the half marathon portion of the event begins at 7:00 AM, while the rest of the races start at 8:00 AM. An awards ceremony will follow the last timed runner who crosses the finish line.
