Set for its second annual running in 2016, the Race 13.1 Knoxville Half Marathon is set to run along a combination of roads and running, walking and biking trails just a few miles southwest of Knoxville and less than an hour’s drive from Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The out-and-back course for the race starts and finishes at the Pinnacle at Turkey Creek, a shopping mall just north of downtown Farragut at 11251 Parkside Drive.
From there, runners will start out heading southwest along Parkside Drive around the outskirts of the mall, and then onto Grigsby Chapel Road.
Just after they pass the first mile marker, the race turns right onto the Grigsby Chapel Greenway, a 2 1/4-mile paved trail that connects many of the homes, schools and businesses here, and provides a link with the Campbell Station Greenway that begins near Campbell Station Park.
The shaded, tree-lined trail features “at least one serious hill,” the Knoxville Track Club notes in its review of area running trails.
Once runners weave their way through the trail and the roads through the neighborhoods, they’ll hit the first turnaround point at the end of East Ashton Court — and then retrace their steps all the way back to Grigsby Chapel Road.
Once they make it back to the outskirts of the mall, the course turns left onto Lakes Edge Drive for a brief stretch before turning right onto the Turkey Creek Greenway trail, which the KTC says has “nowhere near the neon glitz and blur of the mall,” but instead features “nice views of the water and nearby hillsides.”
There’s a second turnaround point on the Turkey Creek Greenway when runners have nearly reached the creek itself; after that, the course heads back to the starting line area at the Pinnacle at Turkey Creek for the race finish line.
