Springtime in the Houston area brings the fifth annual running of the Angie’s Half Crazy Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile race that saw just under 340 runners cross the finish line at its inaugural running in 2008 and now regularly sells out its 750 spots each year.
With its start and finish lines at the University of Houston’s Clear Lake campus, the race takes runners and walkers on a largely fast and flat course around the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, over a bridge that crosses Pasadena Lake and around the edges of Armand Bayou Park in the southeastern corner of the Houston metropolitan area, just outside the city.
From the starting line on Falcon Pass at the Clear Lake campus, runners follow what one participant in last year’s race called a “pancake-flat” route, starting out running north toward Bay Area Park and along Bay Area Boulevard.
Runners then turn right onto Red Bluff Road, which they follow for a brief straightaway stretch until they meet up with Kirby Road, which takes them through the Taylor Lake Village residential neighborhoods.
Next, runners hit the half-way turnaround point at NASA Parkway, and then follow the route they’ve just run in reverse all the way back to the starting line at Falcon Pass — along Kirby Road, Red Bluff Road, Bay Area Boulevard, Krueger Way and Falcon Pass again.
The Angie’s Half Crazy event is open to both walkers and runners, and proceeds benefit high school students who participate in cross-country running in the local area.
