Saturday, November 17, 2018 • Anthony, TX • Course Map
Set for its 8th annual running on the weekend before Thanksgiving, the Flying Horse Half Marathon & 5K saw just over 400 runners cross the finish line in both races combined last year, including more than 270 half marathoners on a course that’s fast and flat along the streets of this Texas border city.
Nestled along the Rio Grande in the westernmost corner of Texas, just south of the state line with New Mexico and just north of the border with Juarez, Mexico, El Paso and Juarez are home to some 3 million people combined, a fact that’s earned them the nickname “Paso del Norte” or “El Paso-Juarez.”
They’re surrounded by the Franklin Mountains and the Organ Mountains of nearby New Mexico, which can be seen from El Paso on clear days.
For the race, runners will actually run a double-loop course just north of El Paso in nearby Anthony, where they’ll start the race next to Henry Miramontez Memorial Park at Franklin Street and Richard White.
From there, the race follows a clockwise loop around 4th Street, O’Hara Road, West Frontage Road, and Wildcat Drive past Anthony High School, before doing it all over again one more time and heading into the finish line back on Franklin Street.
Runners who feel up to the challenge can take part in the organizers’ “Half+Half Challenge,” and enter in both the Transmountain Challenge Half Marathon as well as the Flying Horse Half, which run just two weeks apart.
