Set for its 5th annual running on the first weekend in December 2016 — which coincides with the annual Festival of Lights displays at Moody Gardens leading up to the Christmas holidays — the Holiday Half Marathon at Moody Gardens also features a Saturday family fun walk in addition to its 13.1-mile run and 5K on Sunday.
The race is set to follow a double-loop course along the fast, flat streets of Galveston Island, through the resort and amusement park area known as Moody Gardens, which features a golf course, resort hotel and spa in addition to ample attractions for kids like its Discovery Museum, Palm Beach, aquarium and Rainforest Pyramid, which houses a wide variety of exotic species of plants and animals collected from rain forests around the world.
Runners will start and finish the out-and-back course for the race on the grounds of the resort, and follow it twice as it winds around the roads and into portions of nearby Scholes International Airport.
Thanks to its location on an island on the Gulf of Mexico, entrants can count on a fast and flat course for virtually the entire race, a nice feature if you’re looking to set a personal record time.
For runners who don’t feel up to running 13.1 miles on their own, the race also offers a relay race for the half marathon. See the race website for more details.
Race Weather & Climate
Located on Galveston Island on the Texas Gulf coast, about 50 miles southeast of downtown Houston, Galveston typically sees December temperatures that average between 52°F and 64°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.5 inches for the month.
On race day (Dec. 4), the average low is 54ºF and the average high is 66ºF.
