The Walker County Fairgrounds play host to the annual Huntsville Half Marathon & 5K, which will celebrate its 42nd annual running through the streets of this south Texas town that lies just over an hour’s drive north of Houston,.
While the previous course was described by past participants as both scenic and challenging, this year’s course takes runners on a double out-and-back course that is “much more friendly to our runners from Houston!” as the race director puts it.
Starting at the Walker County Fairgrounds just west of downtown Huntsville, the course takes runners down the roads of State Highway 30, traversing the rural roads, which this time of year should be decorated with fall foliage. While much of the race course takes runners along the highway, there’s a brief segment that takes runners along the side roads before returning to the highway.
After returning to the fairgrounds, quarter marathoners are done. Half marathoners, however, run the course a second time to complete the 13.1 miles before joining the finish line party. There’s a time limit of 3 hours, 30 minutes for the half marathon.
Race Weather & Climate
Nestled along the northern edge of the Sam Houston State Forest in southern Texas, about 70 miles north of downtown Houston, Huntsville typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in October, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 28°F (in 1993) and as high as 98°F (in 1953).
On race day (Oct. 17), the average low is 54ºF and the average high is 75ºF.
