Lights of Life Half Marathon & Relay

Saturday, October 1, 2016 • Sulphur Springs, TX • Course Map

Set for its annual fall running here in this small town that’s just over an hour’s drive from Dallas, the Lights of Life Half Marathon follows an out-and-back double loop course through occasionally hilly terrain, and also serves as a fundraiser for the locally-based Hopkins County Healthcare Foundation and Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.

Runners will start the race in the heart of Sulphur Springs, a community of just over 15,000 whose most notable buildings and places include the Hopkins County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Celebration Plaza, which fans out like the spokes on a wheel from Courthouse Square in the center of town.

From there, the course starts out by heading north along Church Street, which runners will remain on for just over a mile. Once they reach Airport Road, they make a left turn and head west toward the Sulphur Springs Airport, and then turn left again once they reach Hillcrest Drive. That’s followed by the only real uphill stretch of the race, which unfolds along Hillcrest for the next couple of miles.

Once runners make it to Main Street, they make another left and head east this time, back in the direction of the Sulphur Springs city center. At City Park, they’ll turn off and head into the park, passing by the Southwest Dairy Museum, a small lake and a baseball field before heading out from the park on Conally Street.

Runners keep heading east back into town, and when they make it Celebration Plaza again, they’ll bear to the left to turn back onto Church Street and run this loop all over again.

Runners can choose from the individual half marathon — run all 13.1 miles by yourself — or the two-person partner relay or four-person team relay team option. Walkers are welcome, and the course is USATF-certified.
