Outlaw Half Marathon & 5K

Nestled just outside of Fredericksburg in rural Texas, the unincorporated community of Luckenbach plays host to the annual Outlaw Half Marathon & 5K every April, taking runners through the country roads of Texas Hill Country.

Luckenbach, which is known for its country music scene on the weekends despite not having much in the way of residents, resembles a ghost town with its lack of residents. Its post office was closed in 1971, and Luckenbach started using the Fredericksburg zip code at that time. The general store is still active, and visitors can purchase postcards, shirts, and other items with the town logo: “Everybody’s Somebody in Luckenbach”.

Half marathoners start and finish the course on Luckenbach Town Loop, home to a general store and a former post office building. From there runners continue onto Grapetown Road, taking in the country road views until just after mile 5. The race then continues left onto Old San Antonio Road until reaching the halfway point and retracing the path of the first half of the race toward the finish line.

The half marathon’s time limit is five hours, giving walkers plenty of time to walk the course. Strollers are also welcome for the event, provided that they begin at the back of the pack for everyone’s safety.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central Texas, Fredericksburg experiences mild to warm weather in April, with record temperatures ranging as low as 24° (1987) and as high as 104° (1963).

On race day (Apr. 6), the average low is 52ºF and the average high is 78ºF.
