Set for its 6th annual running this fall, the RunStrong Laredo Kick-Asphalt Half Marathon also features a 5K as well as a team relay for the half marathon, and takes runners on an out-and-back loop route that starts and finishes at Laredo’s Uni Trade Stadium, the home of the Laredo Lemurs minor league baseball team.
The race is hosted and organized by RunStrong Laredo, a locally based nonprofit that seeks to “facilitate the development of strength and character in every runner that participates,” for both adults and children.
The group promotes running as a way to help build teamwork and sportsmanship skills for kids, as well as dedication and a commitment to health and fitness among adults and children.
For runners in the half marathon, the race begins — like the 5K and the half marathon relay — at Uni-Trade Stadium, which opened in 2012 and is also home to the Laredo Roses, a women’s full-contact football team.
There, runners leave the stadium and turn first onto Sinatra Parkway, which is followed by turns onto Jacaman Road and then Bob Bullock Loop highway (20).
Once they’re on Highway 20, runners head south for the next couple of miles, which run past the Laredo International Airport and Lake Casa Blanca. At the intersection of Saunders and 20 — near the southern end of Lake Casa Blanca — runners make the turnaround and head north for a very gradual uphill over the next several miles, along Jacaman, McPherson Road and Del Mar Boulevard, before heading back to the stadium for the race finish.
