Formerly known just as the Tyler Half & 5K, the race that takes runners through the heart of what local officials call the “rose capital of the nation” in honor of the flower and the industry that has put this city on the map.
The race is scheduled to coincide with the annual Texas Rose Festival here in Tyler, a city located in the Piney Woods region of northeastern Texas that celebrates its biggest industry with this annual tradition that includes a rose parade, the scent of literally hundreds of thousands of roses on display at the event’s rose show, and ample time for visitors to take in the city’s many hundreds of acres of rose fields and farms.
Shortly after runners leave the starting line at the Rose Center, runners in the half marathon head east along Houston Street to Englewood Avenue, where they turn right and head south for a loop stretch.
The half marathon course next loops back around onto Erwin Street and heads east for nearly a mile until the turn onto Vine Avenue, where runners turn right and head south along Vine and then Augusta and Robertson Avenues.
While the first half of the race has some rolling hills, the second half features a few slightly steeper hills, particularly between mile markers 6 and 8 as runners head around the loop along Sunnybrook, Vine, Alamo Drive and then back onto Robertson Avenue.
Runners head back onto Sunnybrook after a brief stretch up Robertson for one last southern loop, down to the intersection with Amherst Street and Old Bullard Road. Once they hit the southernmost point in this loop, the course then begins the long trek back northward for the last three miles of the race, taking runners along what is probably the steepest hill of the course along Clifton Avenue, between mile markers 10 and 11.
After the crest of the hill around the 11th mile, just as runners are making the turn from Clifton to 8th Street and then again onto College Avenue, the remainder of the course’s last two miles provide a respite from the hill they’ve just climbed.
From there, the course brings runners all the way up College Avenue back toward the starting line area, with one last turn onto W. Front St. to the finish line.
Race Weather & Climate
Located among the rolling hills of Northeast Texas, just over 95 miles east of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, Tyler typically sees mild to moderately warm weather (and the city’s rainiest month of the year) in October, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 27°F (in 1993) and as high as 97°F (in 1989).
On race day (Oct. 15), the average low is 56ºF and the average high is 79ºF.
