Run along a course that unfolds entirely along the grounds of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base here just south of Tucson, a base whose history dates all the way back to 1925 and which has played a role in every major American armed conflict since the second World War, the Davis-Monthan AFB Half Marathon & Relay also features an event called the Rescue Warrior Challenge, a series of five athletic events designed to test the mettle of every entrant.
Open only to members of the U.S. military -- you'll need a valid military I.D. to enter the base in order to participate in the race -- the half marathon and the relay follow a course that starts at the base's Benko Fitness Center Track, and takes runners on a route that will feature a roughly two-mile stretch through the nearby 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center, also known as "the Boneyard" for the aircraft that idle there, dormant on the desert floor.
The race also is designed as a fundraiser whose proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization known as the That Others May Live Foundation, which helps support the children of pilots who have lost their lives over the years in Air Force Combat Search and Rescue missions.
