Arizona > Mermaid Half Marathon Arizona, 10K & 5K
Peoria, AZ  •  Sunday, February 23, 2014  •  Course Map

Open to walkers, runners, hikers, bikers and horseback riders, the New River Trail is the setting for the annual Mermaid Arizona Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, part of the Mermaid Series of half marathon races that takes place in the late winter and spring here in Arizona and in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Runners will notice the elevation chart in the course map for the race shows a long, steady uphill in the second half of the race, followed by an equally long and gradual downhill. Don't be overly worried about the hills, however -- the largely fast and mostly flat trail features an elevation climb of about 150 feet over a stretch of more than 6 miles, so the incline is very gradual.

The out-and-back course for the race begins in Peoria's Rio Vista Community Park, which lies along the New River that flows through this big suburban community just outside Phoenix. From there, runners head onto the New River Trail, a nearly 10-mile-long paved pathway that stretches between Williams Road in north Peoria to Olive Avenue at its southernmost point.

All along the trail, runners are treated to views of the river flowing by, as they head south from the starting line for the first mile and a half of the race, along the same side as Rio Vista Park. They make the turn and cross over the river between the 1st and 2nd mile markers, just before they reach Grand Avenue, and from there they head north for approximately the next 6 miles until they hit the second turnaround, near Deer Valley Road.

From there, the race heads south again, unfolding along the same stretch of the New River Trail that runners have just run. They'll run back in the opposite direction from whence they just came for roughly the next 4 miles, until they reach the bridge that crosses over the river just off Banff Lane and 85th Drive, which will bring them back over into Rio Vista Park for the race finish.

In addition to the races for adults, there is also a "Mini Mermaid" 1.5-mile race for girls ages 9 through 12 and another one for girls ages 6 through 8, which start at 10:00 AM and 10:05 AM, respectively. They're designed as an introduction for young girls into the world of running, and to give them the chance to cross a real finish line in a supportive environment.
