Arizona > Tour de Safford Half Marathon & Bicycle Races
Safford, AZ  •  Saturday, October 29, 2011  •  Course Map

The lone footrace in a day that's otherwise devoted to cycling (rather than running) events, the Tour de Safford Half Marathon is joined by three challenging bicycle races -- of 33, 66 and 101 miles -- and takes runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Safford Regional Airport, here in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona.

Runners will make their way along a combination of paved and dirt road surfaces during the half marathon's 13.1 miles, which start out by heading west out of the airport on East Airport Road. The course keeps runners on East Airport for about the first 3 1/2 miles of the race until they meet up with San Juan Mesa Road, where they turn right and head north -- and also turn off the paved road portion of the race and onto dirt roads, which they'll stay on for roughly the next seven miles.

The course continues north along San Juan Mesa for about four miles until the next turn, where runners turn right and head southeast along the dirt roads that wind through the desert hills, back in the direction of the airport. This turn also starts a long, gradual downhill descent back to the finish line, as runners will have just completed a very gradual uphill over the previous four miles, which begins with the turn onto San Juan Mesa.

The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 7:30 AM -- the cycling events will start before (for the 101-mile race) and after the half marathon (the 66- and 33-mile races begin at 9:15 AM and 10:15 AM, respectively). Runners also should note that the half marathon will have a time limit of 3 1/2 hours.
