Event Details

Designed as a benefit for the locally based River Valley Marine Corps League, a community nonprofit that serves the Fort Smith area with programs including Toys for Tots, Arkansas's HardCorps HeartCorps Half Marathon & 5K marks its second annual running in the early spring of 2011, along an out-and-back route that takes runners through the streets of the city's historic Chaffee Crossing district.

From the starting line at the corner of Ellis Street and Darby Avenue, runners make their way out into the streets of Fort Chaffee, a historic military base that has also served as a the filming location for movies like Biloxi Blues, The Tuskegee Airmen and A Soldier's Story. Runners follow Darby Avenue to the intersection with Taylor Street, where they turn right and head southwest along Taylor until they reach Roberts Boulevard.

After turning left onto Roberts, runners then turn right on Hospital Road and pass the first mile marker, and also hit the first significant hill of the race. As runners make their way through the next few miles -- along Custer Avenue, Veterans Avenue and West Lake Road -- the course continues its gradual uphill climb through miles 4, 5 and 6, and the race reaches its highest point (just over 600 feet above sea level) at the mid-way point of the race.

Once runners hit the turnaround point, they then head back along the course they've just run in reverse, no doubt enjoying the gradual downhill of the next few miles. The race will finish back at the starting line, and feature a forgiving downhill stretch just as runners are making their way along the final mile.
