Arkansas > Whistlestop Half Marathon & 10K Run/Walk
Ashdown, AR  •  Saturday, May 10, 2014  •  Course Map

Set for its 3rd annual running in 2014 along the downtown streets and rural country roads outside this small southwest Arkansas city of roughly 4,800 residents along the Little River, about a 20-minute drive from Texarkana, the Whistlestop Half Marathon & 10K Run/Walk is part of the city's first-ever Whistlestop Festival, and will be the festival's centerpiece event.

The race is set to take runners on an out-and-back course that starts in downtown Ashdown at the corner of Main and Frisco Streetsat 8:00 AM. From there, the course will first wind through the city along Frisco and Fulton Streets, and then head north on Buck Wright Road toward Stone Road. There, runners will make a right and then take a left onto Willow Street/Hicks Road, and begin a stretch that unfolds along the rolling country roads north of town.

Runners will continue heading north for the next few miles until they reach Douglas Avenue, where they'll make a left turn and head toward the small nearby community of Wilton. There, the race makes a loop turnaround on Wilton's streets and then brings runners back east along Douglas Avenue back to Hicks Road, where they'll turn right and head south, retracing their steps earlier in the race back into downtown Ashdown for the race finish.

While they're in town, runners and their friends and families can explore some of the sights and places that have earned the area a reputation as one of western Arkansas's best birding and fishing destinations, including nearby Millwood Lake and Millwood State Park.

There's also the White Cliffs Natural Area just north of Millwood Lake, a more than 570-acre outcropping of Annona Chalk that houses one of the best and least disturbed fossil-collecting sites in the nation.

Just a few blocks from the race starting and finish line area lies the Little River County Courthouse, which is probably the city's best-known landmark and is lit up with thousands of lights during the Christmas season each year.
