California > Borrego Springs Half Marathon, Relay & Quarter Marathon
Borrego Springs, CA  •  Saturday, December 15, 2012  •  Course Map

Sunscreen, shades and a protective hat will be a must at the Borrego Springs Half Marathon, Half Marathon Relay and Quarter Marathon, a race event managed by Julian Stables that is set for its third annual running as fall is giving way to winter here in Southern California, in a small community that is surrounded on all sides by the 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

A tourist draw thanks to its virtually year-round warm weather -- make that very warm in the summer season -- Borrego Springs is popular especially with visitors from colder climates up north who flock to the town in winter for its four golf courses, plentiful sunshine and temperatures that hit the 70s during the winter months, as its population of around 3,000 residents swells to about 10,000 in the winter months.

The race itself is being run to benefit the Borrego Springs High School athletic department, and the course for the 13.1-mile half marathon follows an out-and-back loop route that starts and finishes at Borrego Springs High School, along Diegueno Drive. From there, those running the half marathon run the clockwise loop route twice to complete 13.1 miles, while those running the quarter marathon run a single loop.

With the exception of the stretch in the early part of the race that skirts the golf course along Pointing Rock Drive, runners can expect plenty of wide-open terrain out here on the western edge of the Sonoran Desert. There are plenty of desert flora and fauna, including palm, but no real tree cover anywhere along the route, so be prepared for lots of bright sunshine.

If you have time and you're staying in a local hotel for the race, be sure to get outside a night to view the evening sky, as the area is reputed to be one of the region's best places to view the brilliant number of stars that you can't see when you're in more populated (and well-lit) areas -- local residents even customarily keep outdoor lighting to a minimum at night to aid in viewing the night sky here.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the Southern California desert, just over 90 miles northeast of San Diego and roughly 150 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Borrego Springs usually sees very hot summers with temperatures that climb well into triple digits every year. In the early winter, however, the weather is usually far milder -- December temperatures average between 69°F and 43°F, while rainfall amounts are usually very low, as the area averages about 3/4 of inch for the month. On the day of the race (Dec. 15), the average high is 69°F and the average low is 43°F.
