California > Catalina Island Conservancy Half Marathon
Avalon, CA  •  Saturday, September 28, 2013  •  Course Map

Not many marathoners can boast of having run a race on an island inside of a nature preservation area. But, if you run the Catalina Island Conservancy Half Marathon, you can do just that. The race takes place in the vast area of the Catalina Island Conservancy Nature Preserve, which offers amazing views of open fields and backdrops laced with mountains and hills.

Runners won't have an easy race as the terrain is quite rugged in spots, and to make the race even more exciting, runners may encounter one of the 150 bison that live within the perimeter of the marathon path. The Conservancy is home to 150 bison that are given free range to roam as they would naturally.

The race begins near Avalon Bay and takes runners south onto Renton Mine Road. Here runners will have amazing views of the surrounding strikingly-blue bay which offsets the autumn colors of the land. Runners then head west where they will pass East Mountain and will eventually end up on East End Road that provides picturesque views of the East Peak.

Continuing on runners will end up on Divide Road and at mile 9, runners will turn around and head towards the Hermit Gulch Trail. This trail is full of hills but the view is like nothing you've ever seen before. The race finishes after runners take a trek down Avalon Canyon Road. Throughout the race runners have access to six different water stations.
