California > Conquer the Bridge Half Marathon & 5.3-Mile Race
San Pedro, CA  •  Monday, September 2, 2013  •  Course Map

More than 1,300 runners crossed the finish line at last year's Conquer the Bridge Run, an out-and-back race that unfolds over the Vincent Thomas Bridge at the Port of Los Angeles to Terminal Island, where the course takes runners around the docks and then back again across the bridge to the finish line back at John Gibson Junior Park.

This year will mark the debut of the event's first-ever half marathon, which will share the same starting and finish line as the 5.3-mile run and will also feature two runs across the scenic (and famous) Vincent Thomas Bridge, from which runners will be able to see the vast Pacific Ocean stretching out on the horizon. Both races will start and finish on the outskirts of the park at West 5th Street and South Harbor Boulevard.

From there, the course first heads south along Harbor and then back north again, turning runners left onto the access road for the bridge just after the 2nd mile marker. Then runners head across the bridge to Terminal Island and into the Port of Los Angeles until runners reach the turnaround point on the docks, a stretch that's perfectly flat (and near sea level) until they make it back to the bridge.

For the two stretches across the bridge, runners and walkers will use only the right lanes. The expansion grates on the bridge are set to be covered with specially compressed rubber mats to provide the safest and most comfortable footing for runners while they're on the bridge, organizers note, and they'll be marked by cones. There won't be water stations on the bridge itself, but immediately after the bridge there will be a water station at the Buono's Pizzeria Watering Hole.

Walkers are welcome in the 5.3-mile race, though the half marathon is for runners only. If the Vincent Thomas Bridge and the scenery surrounding it look familiar while you're running the race, you're right -- it's been featured in movies like To Live And Die In L.A., Gone In Sixty Seconds, Heat, City Of Angels, and Charlie's Angels.
