Event Details

Like its counterpart event that takes place earlier in the spring -- the Run Deo Run 45K & Half Marathon, run in early March -- South El Monte's Going Bananas Marathon, Half Marathon & Birthday Celebration is organized by the Southern California-based Charle Alewine racing group, and takes runners on a multiple-loop route around the city's Legg Lake Park.

The course for the race follows a 2.2-mile loop around the park, part of the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area that lies just a short drive east from Los Angeles. Those running the half marathon will make six loops to complete the 13.1 miles of the half marathon, while those running the full marathon make 12 loops for their race. Organizers note that the race will have one aid station at the start & finish line area, so runners are encouraged to bring water bottles with them out on the course.

Also like the other races in the series, the Going Bananas event is a small race, limited to 25 runners to make for a more intimate-size running event. Both the full and the half marathon start and finish at the Legg Lake Park entrance on Santa Anita Avenue, and take runners on a mostly flat and fast course along the park roads, sidewalks and dirt trails that surround Legg Lake in the middle of the park.

As noted above, the Going Bananas Half Marathon is one of a series of races staged throughout the year by Charlie Alewine Racing, which organizes marathon, half marathon and several other distance races throughout the year in and around the Los Angeles area, and also includes the Ayala Park Marathon, Half Marathon & 50-Mile Run in May, and the Marina's Long Beach Marina Marathon & Half Marathon in April.

Race Weather & Climate

Located roughly 14 miles east of Los Angeles, the city of South El Monte typically experiences mild to moderately warm (and occasionally hot) conditions in the late spring, and usually sees its driest weather in the late spring and summer months. In May, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 79°F and 57°F, while rainfall totals average just under a quarter of an inch for the month.

$44 for the half marathon
$50 for the full marathon
