California > Guns 'N Hoses Half Marathon & 5K
Ontario, CA  •  Sunday, April 22, 2012  •  Course Map

Cancelled for 2012

Set for its second annual running in the mid-spring season in Southern California's Inland Valley region just outside Los Angeles -- the race for 2012 moves up to April from June, when its inaugural running took place in 2011 -- the Guns 'N Hoses Half Marathon & 5K will be run this year as part of the California Half Marathon Series.

The race's name is a tribute both to police and firefighting professionals and as a tribute to the area's annual Western States Police & Fire Games, a week-long series of 64 athletic competition events that draws more than 10,000 police officers and firefighters to compete from around the western part of country every four years, from Alaska to Arizona. The Games host Olympic-style events in sports ranging from archery, boxing and cross country running to cycling, police dog skills competitions and wrestling.

The Guns 'N Hoses Half Marathon starts off -- the Games take place each year in early June -- with an out-and-back race that starts and finishes at the Ontario Convention Center, which lies between Holt Boulevard and the San Bernardino Freeway (Interstate 10). From there, runners head west and then turn right and head north along Vineyard Avenue, which they follow under the interstate up to the intersection with Inland Empire Boulevard, where they turn right and begin heading east.

As they're making their way eastward, runners pass by Ontario's Cucamonga Guasti Regional Park, a roughly 150-acre urban park that's perhaps most popular for swimming and fishing, thanks to the park's two lakes that stock trout and catfish year-round. Runners keep heading east past the park and stay on Inland Empire Boulevard for the next three miles until they reach the Ontario Mills shopping mall.

Once runners reach Mills Circle, the loop road around the mall, they turn left and head along the northern section of the loop road, heading all the way around until they meet up with Ontario Mills Parkway, where they turn left and head east again toward Vintage Avenue. The course turnaround point is here along Vintage, as runners make a loop around Vintage, Concourse and Barrington before turning back onto the Ontario Mills Parkway, where they then start heading west and retrace their steps along the route they've just run all the way back to the finish line at the convention center.

Just over 470 runners crossed the finish line in both the half marathon and the 5K races combined at the inaugural running in 2011, including 286 runners in the half marathon.
