California > Mojave Narrows Half Marathon, 5K & 10K
Victorville, CA  •  Saturday, May 18, 2013  •  Course Map

One of the few places where the Mojave River flows above ground here among the San Bernardino Mountains and the Mojave Desert of Southern California, the Mojave River Narrows have over the centuries created something of an oasis in the desert between what is now Apple Valley and the nearby town of Victorville, and where runners will start their 13.1-mile route at the all-new half marathon that shares its name.

Featuring 10K and 5K races that are open to both runners and walkers and a half marathon that's open only to runners -- plus a run for kids -- the Mojave Narrows Regional Park races follow out-and-back courses that start and finish inside the park, which lies just south of Victorville off Interstate 15. From there, runners head out first with a two-and-a-half-mile loop that takes them through the park, past both Horseshoe and Pelican Lake, and then out onto Yates Road.

The terrain is a combination of paved park roads and dirt trails in the early going, and the course will seem flat through the early miles as well, though it actually follows a very gradual ascent from the start to the mid-way point of the race. After runners leave the park, they head into the residential neighborhoods that lie just south of it, winding their way among the rows of houses that lie next to the larger Spring Lake.

Runners keep making their way southward, along Sea Gull Drive and Riverview Drive, on their way down to the campus of Victorville Community College. The course then makes a loop around campus and past the college's athletic fields, with a big, mile-long loop around Jacaranda Avenue before heading back onto Yates Road. Runners will hit the highest point on the course here on Jacaranda, and then the route begins a long, steady and gradual decline as it brings the field back north along Yates toward the park.

On the return route back toward Mojave Narrows Park along Yates Road, runners will get to see both houses in the neighborhoods on one side and the sandy, desert-like terrain that's native to this region on the other side. After turning into the park entrance road, there's one last loop out to the park's parking area to complete 13.1 miles, and then back in toward Pelican Lake for the race finish.

The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 7:00 AM, followed by a 7:30 AM start for the 10K and 5K races, and a 9:00 AM start for the kids' mile race.
