California > Ridgecrest Run for the Fund Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Ridgecrest, CA  •  Saturday, May 11, 2013  •  Course Map

Set for its 5th annual running this year -- and its first ever with the 13.1-mile race distance -- the Run for the Fund 10K and 5K adds a half marathon, all of which are part of an event that benefits the Semper Fi Fund, which provides financial assistance to injured and critically ill members of the U.S. armed forces and their families.

Runners start the race at Leroy Jackson Park in Ridgecrest, a city of more than 27,000 people near California's Sierra Nevada mountains within driving distance of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and just south of the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. From there, the race route heads north past Burroughs High School and then east along Monterey Avenue, unfolding along mostly flat terrain the race's first few miles.

The race's biggest hill occurs between mile markers 3 and 4 as runners are heading into the turnaround point on Pilot Plant Road, along the long out-and-back stretch in the first half of the race. After they head back down the hill, the route brings runners back into Ridgecrest for stretches along Richmond Road, Fowler Street, Lauritsen and Hornet Street, which is followed by another long out-and-back in the second half of the race, along Drummond, Chelsea and McLean Streets.

More than 200 runners came out to run in the 10K and 5K combined at the race's 2012 running, and organizers expect even more with the new half marathon in 2013.

Race Weather & Climate

Located just south of the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California's Central Valley, roughly 150 miles north of Los Angeles, Ridgecrest typically sees May temperatures that average between 53°F and 87°F, while rainfall totals average about 0.1 inches, making May the city's third-driest month of the year.

On the day of the race (May 11), the average low is 52°F and the average high is 85°F.
