California > California Run Festival Marathon, Half Marathon, 50K, 10K & 5K
Vacaville, CA  •  Sunday, May 27, 2012  •  Course Map

The rolling hillsides, farmlands and fruit orchards of this small Northern California city that lies halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento serve as the backdrop for runners at the all-new California Run Festival series of races, which features a full marathon, half marathon, 50K, 5K and 10K that make their second annual running on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend in 2012.

Each of the races takes place inside Vacaville's Lagoon Valley Park, a 470-acre public park that lies just off the highway from Interstate 80 and which is also home to the historic Pena Adobe, the first home built here in Solano County, back in the late 1840s. Runners in each race will follow a loop route that takes them both around the lagoon that lies at the center of the park as well as past the Pena Adobe and along a combination of trails and park roads, all of which lie in a valley surrounded by the Vaca Mountains.

Runners in the half marathon -- like those in the other races -- will start and finish the race in the parking lot area along the northeast corner of the lagoon, with a starting time of 7:00 AM. (The full and half marathons start together at 7:00 AM, as well as those running in the 5K and 10K races.) From there, runners make what is roughly a clockwise loop, first around the park roads that surround the lagoon and then along the wide dirt trails that lie closer in to the shore of the lagoon.

Once runners reach the parking lot where the start/finish line lies, they then head out on a second loop along the route they've just run. The hilliest stretches of the half marathon course occur around the mile 4 marker (which will be roughly between the mile 10 and 11 markers on the second loop), just after runners have passed the Pena Adobe house and where they're making their way along the dirt trails between the park roads near the northern end of the lagoon.

Though it isn't an option for the half marathon or the longer distance races, runners participating in the 5K and 10K races will be permitted to bring their dogs to run with them out on the course, and runners also are allowed to wear iPods or other portable music devices to listen to music during the race. "We believe that music and running go together like a great pair of running shoes and your favorite socks," organizers note, so feel free to pop in your headphones and enjoy the music you train to.
