California > Run Montecito-Summerland Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Summerland, CA  •  Saturday, July 20, 2013  •  Course Map

If the past is any guide, mild temperatures and sunny skies should be in ample supply at the Run Montecito-Summerland Half Marathon, 10K and 5K race, which makes its 3rd annual running along the streets of this gorgeous coastal community just outside Santa Barbara here in Southern California.

Featuring a course that takes runners past several of this area's crown jewels for visitors -- not the least of which is the famed Coast Village Road, which is lined with rows of shops and restaurants, as well as Butterfly Beach on the Pacific Ocean -- the race follows an out-and-back route that starts and finishes in Summerland near the corner of Lillie Avenue and Coleville Street, just blocks from the waves rolling in along the beach.

From there -- runners in the 13.1-mile race will have four hours to complete the course -- runners head out on a route that features a combination of easy, fast and flat paths and also a number of challenging climbs. Race participants will also enjoy a tour of numerous oak-lined streets in Summerland that not only provide a cool running environment but beautiful scenery as well.

From the starting line outside Cafe Luna, where all three races will begin, the half marathoners will enjoy a flat first portion of the race that takes the runners around the city of Summerland along the city streets of the area. Runners can enjoy an even first three miles with very few inclines they enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean. As the course carries on, it begins to present race participants with more challenges, including a steady three mile climb that peaks at the six mile mark.

Those running should be prepared for this climb to start right around the three mile mark and should pace themselves accordingly to take on the challenge. Once the three mile incline has been conquered, runners will only have to take on small minor hills during the rest of the course. After the largest peak, runners will tour through a few different city parks including Manning Park, and will get to run along the edges of the Los Padres National Forest.

At this point runners can enjoy their gradual descent which is primarily a steady downhill incline for three miles. Once the descent is complete, runners will make a final loop in the last stretch of the course. The loop sends runners back into the downtown area of Summerland, to the finish line at Cafe Luna.
