Event Details

The foothills of southeastern Orange County here in Southern California are the setting for the Valentine's Day weekend running of the Run The Dove Marathon & Half Marathon, a trail race that takes runners from this small residential community that lies just east of Rancho Santa Margarita, on a hilly and challenging out-and-back route with beautifully scenic views of the canyon and the mountains surrounding the Dove Canyon community.

From the starting line near the Dove Canyon waterfall, at the corner of Dove Canyon Drive and Plano Trabuco, runners follow a course that runs southward along the area trails known as the Bell Canyon and Bell Ridge trails, which run roughly parallel to Sycamore Canyon Drive for the first two miles. Those running the half marathon follow the route all the way down through Caspers Wilderness Park to the turnaround point at the mid-way point of the half marathon, where the trail meets the Wagon Wheel Hiking and Riding Trail and the South Bell Trail.

After the turnaround, runners then head all the way back along the route they've just run, northward back up to the finish line where they started the race, at Dove Canyon Drive. A challenging course, the race features an overall elevation gain of 1,600 feet for the half marathon, and the trails consist of what the organizers describe as "well-groomed" horseback riding trails and fire roads through the hills just along the edge of Caspers Regional Park, and within sight of the Cleveland National Forest to the east.

Those running the half marathon run the out-and-back trail route once, while those running the full marathon run the route a second time. Limited to 25 runners, the race is part of series of small road and trail running events staged throughout the year by the California-based Charlie Alewine Racing, which also includes January's California Gold Rush Marathon & Half Marathon.
