California > Running School Cal Fit Family Fun Run Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Roseville, CA  •  Sunday, August 31, 2014  •  Course Map

Set for its 5th running in the late summer of 2014, Roseville's Running School Cal Fit Family Fun Run takes runners out on a half marathon, 10K and 5K along the streets and paved running, walking and biking trails that wind through the parks and along the creeks of this city just outside Sacramento.

The race got its start within the Whole Foods corporation as a way to encourage fitness and regular physical activity among children in the Sacramento metro area, especially considering the costs of obesity and related illnesses on the population as a whole. For kids who participate in the race, their running times are measured against national standards for their age groups and they are encouraged to maintain fitness levels within the Cooper Institute's "Healthy Fitness Zone," which recommends fitness levels for all ages.

To encourage kids and their families to take part in the race, Whole Foods also offers discounted registration fees for all runners under age 18 in each of the event's three races (typically as much as half the price adults over 18 pay). Runners follow an out-and-back course for all three races, which start at the Whole Foods Market on Galleria Boulevard, just outside Roseville's downtown.

From there, the course for the half marathon takes runners south for just over a mile along Galleria Boulevard, until runners cross the bridge over Atlantic Avenue and continue south on Harding Boulevard. Shortly after that, runners make the turn right onto the paved running, walking and biking trail known as the Miner's Ravine Trail, which is part of a network of over 100 miles of trails that wind through Roseville and nearby Sacramento, offering bikers and walkers ample space for exercise and recreation.

Runners will remain on the trails and off the roadways for about the next 10 miles of the race, as the course winds eastward roughy in parallel with the creek, to False Ravine Park and Secret Ravine Park. Once runners make the turnaround just before reaching the end of the trail inside Secret Ravine Park, they head back along the route they've just run, following the trails in reverse back toward Harding Boulevard.

There's a final section of the race along the roads near Lincoln Estates Park just after they leave the trail, and then they run back up Galleria Boulevard to the race finish line at the Whole Foods parking lot.
