Colorado > Area 13.1 Half Marathon & Terrestrial 5K
Castle Rock, CO • Saturday, September 14, 2013 • Course Map
Like its counterpart race event in Roswell, Ga. -- now part of a race series that will spread to Austin, San Francisco and New Orleans, La., in the coming year -- the Area 13.1 Half Marathon and Terrestrial 5K in Castle Rock's alien theme beckons with the tagline, "they're coming -- will you escape the invasion?"
The race takes its name from Roswell, New Mexico's infamous Area 51, the site of the alleged alien landing back in the mid-20th century that has been a source of speculation (and conspiracy theories) for decades. The event also has a deeper purpose and meaning, as it serves as a fundraiser for the Matthew E. Russell Foundation and Life Connection Ministries, which supports the people of South Africa by building libraries, putting together feeding programs, educational outreach and more.
For runners in the Castle Rock race, there's both a 13.1-miler and a 5K event, which both will share the same starting line and time -- 7:00 PM at the Douglas County Fairgrounds and Event Center. From there, this nighttime race will take runners out onto the Seller's Gulch Trail and the East Plum Creek Trail, which runs parallel to its namesake East Plum Creek from the fairgrounds up to the neighborhood known as The Meadows, near Castle Rock Adventis hospital.
Once there, runners will reach the end of the East Plum Creek Trail and make the turnaround to retrace their steps in reverse along the path, all the way back to the fairgrounds for the race finish. Runners will have 3 1/2 hours to complete the half marathon, and organizers note that the course will close at 10:30 PM.
